Complete Guide to IEC 60320 Connector Types: C1 Through C23 Explained
IEC 60320 is the international standard that defines the connectors used to connect power cords to electrical appliances worldwide. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard covers inlet and outlet connectors for AC circuits up to 250V and 16A — and it is the reason your laptop charger works in a hotel room on the other side of the world. This guide explains every connector type in the IEC 60320 standard, their ratings, applications, and how to choose the right one for your product. — ## What Is IEC 60320? IEC 60320 specifies “Appliance Couplers for Household and Similar General Purposes.” It defines: – **Sheet C connectors** (female receptacle on the power cord) – **Sheet C+1 connectors** (male inlet on the appliance) Connectors are always sold in pairs. For example, a C13 power cord connector (female) mates with a C14 appliance inlet (male). The standard covers maximum voltage ratings of **250V AC** and current ratings from **0.2A to 16A**, with temperature ratings of standard (70°C) and high-temperature (155°C) variants. — ## IEC 60320 Connector Types: Complete Reference Table | Connector Pair | Max Current | Max Temp | Grounded | Common Application | |—————|————-|———-|———-|——————-| | C1 / C2 | 0.2A | 70°C | No | Shavers, small appliances | | C3 / C4 | 2.5A | 70°C | No | Discontinued | | C5 / C6 | 2.5A | 70°C | Yes | Laptop adapters (Mickey Mouse) | | C7 / C8 | 2.5A | 70°C | No | Laptops, radios (Figure-8 / Butterfly) | | C9 / C10 | 6A | 70°C | No | Older appliances | | C11 / C12 | 10A | 70°C | No | Older appliances | | C13 / C14 | 10A | 70°C | Yes | Computers, monitors, AV equipment | | C15 / C16 | 10A | 120°C | Yes | Electric kettles, high-temp devices | | C15A / C16A | 10A | 120°C | No | High-temp, ungrounded | | C17 / C18 | 10A | 70°C | No | Similar to C13/C14, ungrounded | | C19 / C20 | 16A | 70°C | Yes | Server PDUs, UPS systems | | C21 / C22 | 16A | 155°C | Yes | Industrial, high-temperature | | C23 / C24 | 16A | 70°C | No | High-current, ungrounded | — ## Most Common IEC 60320 Connector Types Explained ### C7 / C8: The Figure-8 or “Butterfly” Connector The C7/C8 is a **2.5A, 70°C, non-grounded** connector pair. Its distinctive oval, symmetrical shape — resembling a figure-8 — makes it non-polarized, meaning it can be inserted either way. **Applications:** Laptop power adapters, notebook computers, radios, small electronics **Voltage rating:** Up to 250V **Key feature:** Compact size, non-polarized > **Note:** The C7 and figure-8 connectors are sometimes confused with the C5 (Mickey Mouse) connector. The C5 has a triangular shape and includes a grounding pin — they are NOT interchangeable. — ### C5 / C6: The “Mickey Mouse” Connector Named for its three-lobe shape resembling Mickey Mouse’s head, the C5/C6 pair is a **2.5A, 70°C, grounded** connector. **Applications:** Laptop power bricks (especially Apple and older HP), projectors **Voltage rating:** Up to 250V **Key feature:** Includes earth ground, polarized — ### C13 / C14: The Standard Computer Power Connector The most widely used IEC 60320 connector globally. The C13 (female, on the cord) and C14 (male, on the appliance) are rated for **10A at 70°C**, fully grounded. **Applications:** Desktop computers, monitors, printers, AV receivers, network switches **Voltage rating:** Up to 250V **Key feature:** The worldwide standard for IT equipment power > **C15 vs C13:** The C15 looks nearly identical to a C13 but has a notch at the top and is rated for **120°C** operation. It is used for electric kettles and other high-temperature appliances. C13 and C15 are **not interchangeable** — a C15 cord will fit a C14 inlet, but a C13 cord will NOT fit a C16 (C15 inlet) safely. — ### C19 / C20: High-Current Server Connector Larger than C13/C14, the C19/C20 pair is rated for **16A at 70°C** with full grounding. **Applications:** Server power distribution units (PDUs), UPS systems, rack-mounted equipment **Voltage rating:** Up to 250V **Key feature:** High current capacity for data center applications — ## How to Choose the Right IEC 60320 Connector Follow this decision tree: 1. **What is the current draw of your appliance?** – ≤ 2.5A → C7/C8 or C5/C6 – ≤ 10A → C13/C14 (grounded) or C17/C18 (ungrounded) – ≤ 16A → C19/C20 (grounded) or C23/C24 (ungrounded) 2. **Does the appliance require grounding (Class I)?** – Yes → Use grounded variants (C5, C13, C19) – No (Class II, double-insulated) → C7, C17, or C23 3. **Is there elevated operating temperature?** – Standard (≤70°C) → C13, C7, C19 – High temperature (≤120°C) → C15, C16 – Very high temperature (≤155°C) → C21, C22 4. **What is the plug standard at the wall outlet end?** – Match the power cord’s plug to local national standard (see our [power cord products by country](https://www.gepowercord.com/power-cords/)) — ## IEC 60320 Power Cord Products from Green Electric As a specialized manufacturer, Shaoxing Green Electric Co., Ltd. produces the full range of IEC 60320 power cords: – C7 cords paired with global plug standards (US NEMA 1-15, Euro CEE 7/16, UK BS1363, etc.) – C13 cords with all major national plug standards – C19 cords for data center and industrial applications – Locking C13 variants for vibration-prone environments – Right-angle C13 connectors for space-constrained installations All products are manufactured in our ISO9001:2015 certified factory in Zhejiang, China. Hi,
I was looking over gepowercord.com to see if you are currently utilizing Google Ads to capture active search traffic in your market.
Right now, there is a consistent stream of high-intent buyers typing commercial search terms directly into Google looking for exactly what you offer. Without a highly optimized campaign running, gepowercord.com can miss out on top-tier visibility at the exact moment they are looking to buy, meaning you miss out on those daily conversions.
Our team has over 20 years of experience managing Google Ads (back when it was still called AdWords). We build precision campaigns that place your website prominently in the search results, ensuring your budget is protected from inefficient clicks.
Are you open to seeing a quick, text-based example of how this would look for gepowercord.com?
Best regards,
Jo
